Víctor Oléa, new vice-president of the World Jurist Association

Victor Oléa has been appointed vice president of the World Jurist Association (WJA) by the association’s board. He joins Kelly Mogbo (Nigeria), Huang Jin (China), James Black II (USA) and Cheol-Kyu Hwang (South Korea) as vice presidents of the association chaired by Javier Cremades.

He holds a law degree from the Universidad Iberoamericana and a Master’s degree in Criminal Procedure Law with two honorable mentions from the Instituto de Estudios Superiores en Derecho Penal and a Master’s degree in Law from a joint program between Harvard University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He is currently a director of the law firm Bufete Oléa y Asociados, founded in 1990. He is also the author of multiple books and articles on legal topics, co-author of numerous publications and has been awarded multiple recognitions, such as Leader of the Mexican Legal Profession.

In addition, he has been the president of the Mexican Bar Association from 2023 to 2025. He has positioned himself as a recognized leader in the international legal profession and is an active member of the International Bar Association, Union Internationale Des Avocats, the American Bar Association and the World Jurist Association.

Before being appointed vice-president of the WJA, Oléa was a member and collaborator of this association, which is why he has been present at the different meetings organized by the World Jurist Association. Thus, he will attend the World Law Congress Dominican Republic 2025 to be held from May 4 to 6 in Santo Domingo and will participate in the panel “Populist Challenges to Liberal Democracy and the Rule of Law” on Monday, May 5. This round table, moderated by Egils Levits, former president of Latvia, will include interventions by Stephan Harbarth, president of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, Jörg Polakiewicz, director of the Directorate of Legal Advice and Public International Law of the Council of Europe, and Omar Leonel Fernández, senator of the Dominican Republic.

Oléa invites everyone to participate in this event and recognizes that “it is very important that lawyers from all over the world are united around this great international organization”.
